Thoracic Surgery

February 2018

is the discipline of Surgery that treats diseases of the chest, other than cardiac diseases. It encompasses a wide variety of conditions, both malignant and benign.
Thoracic Surgery is surgery of the chest  and its contents: lungs, pleura (lining of the chest and lung), diaphragm and chest wall, as well s the space between the two halves, the mediastinum.
As a specialty it evolved because of the need to operate on patients with tuberculosis at the beginning of the 20th century; this is why, even today, many of the specialist centres for diseases of the chest are old sanatoria.
With the increase in the incidence of lung cancer and evolution in surgical in anaesthetic techniques after Wprld War 2, it evolved into  an Oncological Surgical discipline.
